Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Network and Communications group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as a Data Network Administrator! This team works an on-site 4x10 schedule located at our Centra Facilities Area (CFA) with every Friday off.
Responsibilities Include:
  • Use engineering knowledge, practices, and techniques to solve applied and operational problems related to communications infrastructure.
  • Responsible for the design of network infrastructure, implementation of LAN, WAN, and work with various groups such as Wireless Testbed, SCADA Testbed, Diskless/Classified, Cyber Operations, and software development to assist in the testing and design of data networks to meet the specific test/program requirements.
  • Responsible for the capability for successful resolution of critical network failures and implementation of system upgrades.
  • Resolve the most complex problems within a wide area of specialized support functions, including providing alternative approaches to fulfill customer needs, and demonstrating innovation in addressing routine as well as non-routine assignments relating to telecommunications.
  • Evaluate new and revised systems/equipment, analyze equipment failures to determine cause and recommends corrective actions, and identify possible improvements, makes recommendations for purchase of new systems/equipment.
  • Advise and assists in effecting design changes to improve equipment efficiency and/or reduce the cost of operation.
  • Use test, measurement, and diagnostic skills/equipment to determine the cause of malfunctions and category of maintenance.
  • Repair systems/equipment and performs bench equipment tests to verify operability.
  • Provide enterprise network infrastructure technical support in the areas of technical planning, design, and implementation of data network equipment.
  • Contribute and influences achievement of significant programs objectives and to the development of new concepts and techniques for data communications and serve as a resource to management.
  • Provide network troubleshooting expertise such as diagnostics of TCP/IP packets, Cisco switches and routers, UPS/power supplies, network cabling, Redline WiMax equipment, Wireless LAN systems, routing and configuration. Troubleshooting includes: diagnostics, and repair - understanding the network topology, use of protocol analyzers, fiber and copper certification testers, and wireless diagnostic tools.
  • Peer member of a network engineering team providing design and troubleshooting support for both internal and external network customers.
  • Continue to develop competency and independence in completing assignments.
  • Manage multiple tasks or projects independently or with minimal supervision. Expands skills in areas outside original area of expertise.
  • Works independently with occasional oversight, gaining independence. Work is reviewed for soundness of judgment and overall adequacy and accuracy.
  • Resolution of network problems, optimization of network systems and protocols. Network device and profile configuration management.
  • Design and implementation of network devices and policy.
  • High level of understanding and application of principles, concepts, and practices related to networking.
  • Serve as a contributing team member for major projects/tasks and capable of leading small projects/'task as assigned by manager or lead.
  • Maintenance and administration of data communications systems and equipment at the INL.
  • Work with network administrators and engineers, and Cyber Security Analysts to determine areas of weakness in INL's security architecture and specify and implement solutions for controlling those weaknesses.
  • Implementation of system(s) upgrades and/or modifications, working to applicable standards as directed by immediate manager/lead.
  • Provide operations support for data communications systems and equipment at INL.
  • Perform duties as a work package engineer/planner and SSC Primary Owner as defined in INL ISMS Enhanced Work Control Procedure for data communication systems and equipment at the INL.
  • Manage and maintain the INET by making sure the network is tuned for optimum performance, delivering require information to end-users, and interacting properly with Wide Area Networks (WANS).
  • Provide oversight of Network operations Center (NOC) and provide Tier 2 support to the INL OPSCenter as needed. Instructs users in the use of equipment, answers question and resolves problems.
  • Perform filed investigations as a part of the Work Orders creation process.
  • Provide technical expertise in the closure of work orders and trouble tickets, this will consist of the completion of work order: written installation instructions, cost estimates, procurement, applicable drawings, documentations, etc.
  • Checks components for compliance with technical specifications and applicable directives.
  • Assist in the coordination of installation of new hardware/software: Installs tests and monitors of operational effectiveness. Maintains systems configurations records.
  • Available for after-hours work as needed and able to work in a rotational basis.
  • Work with Mission organizations at the site locations at INL to coordinate the technical needs that IM Communications can assist with. Help facilitate the INL Wireless testbed with Data Network solutions.
  • Participate in the creation and establishment of work standards, methods and controls for preventative and unscheduled maintenance actions related area of responsibility.
  • Coordinate all facility maintenance and operations with F&SS to maintain functional dial room and telecom facilities as required within INL facilities. Identify and manage problem resolutions. Provide support services to INL tenants.
  • Assist in the performance of self-assessments, surveillance appraisals, and audits. Correct identified non-compliance findings and observations. Prepare and submit reports and papers as requested and required.


Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree OR 8 years' experience in lieu of degree.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
  • As part of normal job duties, employees may be called out to work after hours to promptly respond to and address user/customer needs.
  • Must have a basic understanding of the technical skills and terminology used by networking personnel to facilitate first tier review of work documentation generated by other staff and have strong verbal and written communication skills.
Experience with one or more of the following:
  • Data Network Administration (routing, switching, troubleshooting, etc.)
  • Layer 2, 3, and 4 switching and token passing architectures
  • Protocols: Internet protocol suite TCP/IP
  • Routing: Cisco IOS/COS and IP routing protocols, etc.
  • Data Network troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repair
  • Enterprise network management applications
  • Windows system administration
Job Information
  • Salary Grade 180 ($62,640 - $100,224)
