The New Mexico Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NMRECA) Board of Directors is seeking candidates for the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The current CEO is retiring at the end of 2022 after a long successful career. The board is looking to continue and grow its positive reputation and relationships locally, statewide, and nationally.

The mission of the NMRECA is to strengthen, support, unify, and represent Cooperative member interests at the local, state, and national levels. It does so by following the seven cooperative principles: voluntary and open membership, democratic member control, members’ economic participation, autonomy and independence, education, training, and information, cooperation among cooperatives, and concern for the community. New Mexico's 15 member distribution co-ops, 2 Generation and Transmission co-ops and 3 associate member co-ops serve 80 percent of the state's land mass with over $1.25 billion invested in power lines and other related equipment to provide electric service to their members.

The NMRECA assists in arranging training programs for directors, managers and employees with outside agencies and consultants. NMRECA provides advocacy and general communications through directories, websites, apps, the annual Legislative Almanac, and its monthly magazine, enchantment, which give New Mexico’s electric cooperatives, who are members of NMRECA, a united forum to communicate with their members.

NMRECA is seeking candidates with the following competencies and qualifications:


  • Cost Consciousness
  • Member Service Oriented
  • Effective delegation, diversity, and judgement
  • Interpersonal, leadership, and management skills
  • Stellar oral and written communication
  • Strategic thinking, planning, and organizational abilities 


  • Related Bachelor’s degree and 6 years of directly related experience, or 10 years of directly related experience
  • Extensive knowledge of electric cooperatives
  • Experience in regulatory and legislative processes at both state and federal levels
  • Current driver’s license with good driving record
  • Language and computer skills
  • Reasoning abilities

The overall responsibility of the CEO is the organizing, directing, and planning of NMRECA’s procedures, operations, and policies. It is also the duty of the CEO to conduct meetings, file reports, and make recommendations as well as ensuring financial and legal performance. Most importantly, the CEO is responsible for making and maintaining positive relationships across the NMRECA domain.
