Job Summary:

PIC Group is seeking a Boiler Operator to provide operational support for temporary HVAC equipment compromised of outdoor mobile boiler and chiller units located at a university in Columbus, OH. The Boiler Operator will be responsible for controlling and monitoring equipment to ensure that the heating and cooling load requirements of the university are maintained. The Boiler Operator ensures mobile boiler and chiller equipment are maintained, including the pump skids, the steam/water heat exchangers, and the make-up and blowdown systems. The Boiler Operator will assist the equipment suppliers during the monthly preventative maintenance activities and will coordinate the removal of blowdown wastewater and delivery of make-up water.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate the temporary HVAC equipment compromised of outdoor mobile boiler and chiller units , and all equipment within, including pump skids, the steam/water heat exchangers, and the make-up and blowdown systems, as required, ensuring proper operations meet the requirements of the system.
  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • Assist and participate in all aspects of Site Safety.
  • Maintain and produce daily logs.
  • Monitor, control, and minimize risks on the project.
  • Ensure project documents are complete, current, and stored appropriately.
  • Collaborate with, and work alongside equipment suppliers as required.
  • Attend regular status meetings with project team.
  • Effectively communicate relevant project information to superiors.
  • Resolve and/or escalate issues in a timely fashion.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
  • Knowledge and understanding of all phases of boiler operation including steam, water levels and quality, pressure valves and piping.
  • Knowledge and experience with steam boiler controls and interfaces.
  • Knowledge of operation and control of Mobile Boiler units is required, both locally at the Boiler Unit, and remotely at the Operator's Station Hut via PLC control interface.
  • Knowledge of operation and control of the Mobile Air Fan-Cooled Chiller Units.
  • Knowledge of Blowdown and Makeup systems operation.
  • Knowledge and experience in the removal of wastewater and the delivery of makeup water.
  • Ability to complete daily and operational log sheets for each shift.
  • Ability to complete monthly preventative maintenance, and any required annual inspection/recertifications, as provided by Equipment Suppliers.
  • Knowledge in occupational Health & Safety, specific to hazard assessment and mitigation planning.
  • Timely completion of pre-job safety plans for the work being performed.
  • Execute Health and Safety audits and assessments, incident/injury investigations, and root cause analysis and reporting
  • Familiarity with programmable logic controllers
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with pump skids and steam/water heat exchangers
  • Experience with basic water chemistry and chemical addition processes as related to boilers and water systems (samples will be analyzed off-site)
  • Experience with Air-Cooled Fan Units
  • Proficiency with operational safety practices, processes, leading and lagging indicators
  • Proficient in use of portable fire extinguishers and firefighting skills
  • Excellent communication skills; both written and verbal
  • High degree of Microsoft Office proficiency, with a focus on MS Word and Excel capabilities

Physical Requirements:
  • Standing, Walking, Sitting and light Climbing (stairs).
  • Moderate noise level in the work environment.
  • Exposure to weather conditions will be commonplace; a self-contained, heated, and cooled area.
  • Moderate lifting.

Education / Experience:
  • Minimum of 5 years boiler operator experience is required.
  • State of Ohio valid High Pressure Boiler Operator's license is required
  • Candidate is preferred to have a Bachelor's Degree in Health & Safety or certification from an accredited health and safety association in lieu of college degree
  • OSHA 10 certification required or ability to attain OSHA 10 certification prior to start of employment.
