Job Summary:
PIC Group has an excellent opportunity for an Auxiliary Operator to support a 30MW combined cycle cogeneration facility located on a university campus in College Park, MD. The Auxiliary Operator will report to the Operations and Maintenance Manager and is an integral part of a team of seasoned operators with a solid history of strong plant performance . The Auxiliary Operator plays a vital role providing the university campus with essential utilities through the safe and reliable start-up, operation, and continuous monitoring of boilers, electric generators, chillers, steam distribution systems, steam and gas turbines, and ancillary equipment as directed by management. The Auxiliary Operator must have a Maryland Stationary Engineer license and will perform selective maintenance on various in-plant and/or satellite equipment under the direction of site management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Start-up, operation, and shutdown of equipment, systems, and the plant in accordance with approved plant procedures, technical manuals and as directed by the Control Room Operator.
  • Monitor and record local operating parameters, adjusting as required to maintain safe and efficient operation.
  • Supports the Control Room Operators in the proper operation of the facility with minimal guidance or assistance.
  • Competently operates and maintains all plant equipment. Capable of operating plant equipment locally via PLC panel interfaces.
  • Communicates plant issues and keeps Control Room Operators fully informed of plant operations, unusual conditions, and faulty equipment.
  • Fully supports the use of a computerized maintenance management system by displaying a proficiency in using the system, entering data consistent with the facility maintenance philosophy.
  • Handles corrective maintenance and preventive maintenance work orders in a timely and high-quality manner as assigned.
  • Visually inspects and listens to equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment, or lubrication.
  • Perform water chemistry analysis. Ensure water chemistry is within proper control ranges. Make adjustments to water chemistry, as needed, by controlling chemical feed and/or blowdown rates.
  • Works with plant chemist, operators, and water treatment vendor to properly monitor overall chemistry program.
  • Monitor plant air and water emissions from outside the control room and take steps to maintain within acceptable limits notifying Control Room Operator of abnormal situations.
  • Observe, report, troubleshoot, and correct situations that are likely to develop into operational problems or safety hazards.
  • Report and respond to chemical spills and leaks in accordance with plant emergency response plans.
  • Monitor and operate equipment circuit breakers and switches as directed by the Control Room Operator for safe and efficient operation of the plant. This includes opening, locking, and tagging for isolation and maintenance.
  • Obtain thorough turnover from Auxiliary Operator being relieved, including special orders and unusual operating conditions. Review operating logs and inspect plant equipment, controls, and indications. Prepare and provide information to the oncoming shift per plant shift turnover process.
  • As directed by the Control Room Operator, perform periodic tests on critical plant systems and equipment including lube oil pumps, turbine valves, turbine system trips, and boiler trips.
  • Test and operate plant fire and chemical safety equipment as directed.
  • Maintain work area in a clean, orderly condition.
  • Report all maintenance activities to the Control Room Operator.
  • Participate in scheduled safety meetings and training.
  • Safely operate vehicles on-site as required.
  • Become responsible for interfacing with management to ensure proper operation and maintenance of the fuel handling systems, in accordance with plant procedures, guidelines, and rules; includes driving the Loaders.
  • Participate in ongoing training to maintain and enhance skills required to perform duties and assist in the training of others.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Control Room Operator and Shift Supervisor.
Job Requirements:
  • Hands-on familiarity with power plant operations, production, or maintenance environment, preferably in a Cogen facility.
  • Ability to use personal computer, calculator, familiarity with Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge with mechanical, instrumentation and electrical equipment.
  • Ability to accurately read and interpret instruments, gauges, and manuals.
  • Knowledge of equipment isolation and tagging procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of the purpose and proper use of the plant safety equipment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills to identify, analyze, and recommend solutions.
• Excellent teamwork skills required and must possess a high degree of initiative and judgment.
  • Ability to respond to plant emergencies/call-ins (day or night) holidays, weekends.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts involving weekends, holidays, backshifts, and overtime.
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively, verbally, and in writing.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree ofaccuracy.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to half and full-face respirators, fall protection equipment, hardhat, safety shoes, safety glasses as needed.
  • Ability to pass a respirator physical and respirator fit test if applicable.
  • Ability to work in varied outdoor environments such as all-weather conditions, moderate noise levels, hazardous conditions, and on the full range of outdoor work surfaces.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and must be insurable by the company's vehicle insurance carrier.
  • Must have a Covid Vaccinated with a valid Covid vaccination card and comply with company COVID testing.
Physical Requirements:
  • Capable of frequent standing, walking, balancing, and sitting.
  • Capable of climbing ladders, stairs, ramps, catwalks, stacks as required.
  • Capable of stooping, squatting, crouching, crawling, kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing, pulling, lifting greater than 50 pounds.
  • Capable of performing repetitive motions as required.
  • Physically capable of entering and working in a confined space such as crawl spaces, shafts, small, enclosed areas, pipes as required.
  • Physically capable of performing demanding work at various heights and in adverse conditions during operations, shutdowns, and in fire/emergency activities.

Education / Experience:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • MarylandStationary Engineer license required.
  • 3+ years of Auxiliary Operator experience in a conventional power plant is required.
  • Cogeneration experience is preferred
