Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Instrument Controls and Data Science group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as an Applied Nuclear Data Scientist.
Our team works an on-site 9x80 schedule located at our Research Education Campus with every other Friday off!
Responsibilities Include:
Perform research and applied studies in instrumentation and controls, machine learning, controls, and data analytics. The research projects will focus on developing scalable, explainable, and trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies to address different nuclear applications and to ensure their adoption across the nuclear industry. These research projects provide opportunity for both theoretical and experimental research. Experience with federated learning and explain-ability aspects of AI/ML would be plus.
Work with a team of dynamic researchers across different domains of expertise in the nuclear industry. Leverage independent problem-solving, mentoring, and leadership skills to develop new research paths and take ownership of projects.
Collaborate and partner with other government agencies, academia, and private sector companies to achieve project objectives; work with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers on challenging work scope; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with management, co-workers, and with customers; publish results of research and development in a mix of refereed publications and conference proceedings; work effectively with other research teams to develop and manage cross-cutting technical programs for a variety of customers; write and/or contribute to competitive proposals to the U.S. Department of Energy and to internal Laboratory research and development funding opportunities.
Minimum Requirements:
  • BS in Nuclear Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Computer Science; Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • Must be able to work in a culturally diverse environment
Preferred Requirements:
  • Ability to earn PhD in Nuclear Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Computer Science; Mechanical Engineering, or related fields within the next 2 years is highly preferred
  • Strong publication record in high-impact journals and reputed conference proceedings in any of the following related areas: machine learning, reliability engineering, nuclear instrumentation and controls is required
  • Strong programming skills in Python, or other relevant software is preferred
  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of machine learning technologies and tools is preferred
  • Experience with developing a deployable AI/ML solution (i.e., production level software development) is plus
  • Experience optimization algorithms and their application
