NEWS: Magnetar Bets $200 Million on Torus Energy Storage Expansion

Utah-based Torus just secured $200M to expand its flywheel-plus-battery storage systems designed to handle both split-second grid hiccups and multi-hour reliability needs. (Bloomberg)

  • The funding will support a new 540K-sq-ft “GigaOne” factory in Salt Lake City, aiming for more than 1 GW of annual capacity within three years (up from today’s 400 MW).

  • For utilities, the draw is resilience: Torus’s hybrid systems can firm renewables, backstop transmission, and serve as instant backup for the surge in AI data center load. CEO Nate Walkingshaw says the new funding should accelerate orders from both grid operators and hyperscalers.
