Digital twins are virtual representations of things in the real world, such as objects, systems, places, and processes. This PowerSession will examine them, their current and potential uses, and how they can help speed up a digital transformation that will enhance the resilience and reliability of power generation, transmission, and distribution.
Climate change is disrupting the electric power industry. Power plant and grid operators are scrambling to make their infrastructure more reliable and resilient in the face of the more frequent and intense weather events it fuels. Simultaneously, to reduce its carbon emissions, the industry is replacing fossil-fuel plants with renewable generation, batteries, and other distributed energy resources that pose their own resilience and reliability challenges. Digital twins can help on both counts. Abder Elandaloussi is an electrical engineer specializing in transmission and distribution innovation. His areas of interest include digital twins, artificial intelligence, IoT device integration, adaptive protection, distributed energy resources, situational awareness, advanced distribution applications, microgrids and blockchain.
Sharon Allan has over 30 years leading, advising, and collaborating with utilities, technology solution providers, government, investors, and National Labs. She has performed due diligence on numerous M&A opportunities, implemented post-acquisition mergers and run global organizations. She is an Advisor on the Board of Enertech Capital and a Board member of NC Green Power.
Lea Boche, Technical Leader at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).
Lea Boche is responsible for data analytics and machine learning applications in the Enabling Technologies R&D group in EPRI’s Generation Sector. Boche began her work at EPRI in its Heat Rate Improvement R&D program, focused on power plant simulations and project management. Following this she worked in the cross-sector initiative AI.EPRI to help further the use of Artificial Intelligence in the industry. Boche’s previous experience includes project engineer and, later, R&D project management for STEAG Energy Services GmbH, Department System Technologies - Energy Management Systems, where she led the development of a decision-support software and was the lead for the innovation management of System Technologies department.
Brian Flett, Senior Director of Product Management, Bentley SystemsBrian Flett coordinates a team of product managers that looks for opportunities to leverage digital twins to meet the needs of infrastructure owners in such industries as roads, rail, utilities, oil & gas, mining. His team works with Bentley’s software development and service teams to use the latest technologies to produce solutions and services that deliver tangible business results.
