Designers working on new high temperature nuclear power plant concepts have one more option to consider when it comes to component construction materials. In contrast to light water plants that might make use of 50 or 100 materials, only five were available for high-temperature reactors. The new material is a combination of nickel, cobalt, chromium and molybdenum is known as Alloy 617 and took years to make its way into the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code because of physics and the way materials are added to standards.
