I’m looking for market research companies that (1) have good quality databases on accounts (where you can filter in industry codes) and (2) research reports for Utilities in the US. Such research should include market analysis & market sizing. Appreciate any recommendation.

I have to recommend Escalent, which has a great power and utilities practice and specializes in market research.  Justin Hammel is a great contact for general questions, and Escalent pairs the proper team members for your needs.  Big catalog of research reports and a history working with an array of utilities, including some of our clients.  They come highly recommended by those clients and I've always found their team to be very helpful to define the goals before the billables begin.

Not sure of the acquisition process for the data, but SNL Energy/S&P Global has some of the market research data. Not sure how deep they go.

It's more tedious, but utilities that file a regulatory report - financial report with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) would have detail in those report on finances only (no market analysis). Those are public docs.

Many thanks Russ

Most of the larger brokerage firms do research on utilities for investment purposes.  They do not share their databases and only offer investment opinions.  There are some newsletters, but again, they do not share their database information.  The large market research and consulting firms (Booze Allen, Boston Consulting, Foster Miller, etc.) may have done some market research, but they generally sell their reports for tens of thousands of dollars.  The US Energy Information Agency has information on fuel use, electric production, and energy consumption, but it is not organized by utility companies.  There is the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) and the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies (AEIC).  They have member utility companies.  I don't know if they maintain the type of databases that are being requested nor if they are willing to share them.  That leaves searching the internet for publicly available reports.  Reports are typically available on the overall industry (ie market size $640 billion).  Most of the companies offering market analysis want to sell a report.  Whether or not there is a searchable database included in the report is an open question.
