Unlike projects in most U.S. states, the bulk of solar projects deployed in Hawaii are rooftop solar, not utility-scale. But Hawaii's utility is taking advantage of the trend and recently approved six solar plus storage projects. These projects will greatly increase the capacity of utility-scale solar, more than tripling the current output and help Hawaii reach its goal of carbon neutrality by 2045. The state has shifted their focus from incentives to adding value to the grid, increasing rooftop solar plus storage and utilizing advanced energy management tools. Hawaii plans to modernize the grid and develop a strong residential energy storage market.
