Big transmission is needed to support utility scale renewables.

New York has ambitious goals as detailed in the PSC order https://lnkd.in/euyy2ZX and their Power Grid Study. Congratulations to LS Power and Next Era Transmission for the opportunity to move forward with new 345kV upgrades. It’s not built yet, but this is a good start.

New York's CLCPA goals call for "transformational quantities of renewable energy, which in turn requires smart new transmission," PSC Chair John Rhodes said in a statement.

"Even greater quantities of various types of renewable generation are necessary to achieve the clean energy mandates for 2040 and 2050," the report concludes. "Meeting these milestones will require investment in renewable generation, as well as storage, energy efficiency measures, electrification of the transportation and heating sectors, and electric transmission and distribution infrastructure."

Mike, 4 hours of battery storage, capable of supplying the state with 15,000 MW, will cost New York electricity customers $37.6 billion* and will need to be replaced every 7-10 years.

9,000 MW of offshore wind will cost $56 billion**. At a generous 40% capacity factor, it will be capable of delivering an average of 3,600 MW, but at unpredictable times and rates. To avoid destroying New York's grid, the windfarm's output will have to be stored in batteries.

After an average of 16.7 hours spent filling New York's exorbitantly-expensive battery banks (while CPV's gas plants are busily burning gas to provide NY's 16.4 GW of average consumption) they will be capable of powering the state for 3 hours, 42 minutes, during which CPV's gas plants can shut down and employees can take a well-deserved break.

Then it's back to work, burning gas for the next 16.7 hours, while New York's exorbitantly-expensive wind turbines are charging the state's exorbitantly-expensive batteries again - making CPV management rich, as they raise greenhouse gases and destroy global species diversity exorbitantly fast.

I provide these hard numbers for the benefit of naïve renewable dreamers who, apparently unschooled in how to use a calculator and ignorant of basic principles of physics, think New York will ever be able to use this strategy to reach 100% carbon-free electricity - in 2040, 2140, or any century thereafter; who believe it's anything but a cynical ploy of fossil fuel interests to shut down Indian Point (nuclear) Energy Center, then capitalize on their naïveté for profit at an expense to the environment, and future generations, which can only be described as...exorbitant.
