In addition to the resources of the substantial UCSC microgrid, Nuvve is working with Bluebird bus company to utilize Bluebird's electric school buses as V2G resources. School buses are parked most of the the day and follow known schedules. That makes them attractive resources for V2G support of the grid..

The large batteries from each school bus, ranging from 125 kWh to 250 kWh, may be aggregated at each site to provide the grid with much needed flexibility, and in the future, can also serve as emergency back-up.

V2G is often discussed for when the EV market gets more penetration, but buses really are the perfect asset for this-- school buses can charge during the afternoon when solar is most available and affordable and at night when wind then picks up. Given their larger batteries, too, you're looking at some real load management opportunity

Agreed. However, the fact that the buses will often be returning or recently returned from their after-school runs does limit their utility for addressing the early-evening ramp phase of the duck curve.

What I most like is the idea of mobile storage capacity. It adds value to the buses as community assets. Supporting school field trips to off-grid locations, emergency backup to critical facilities during power outages, serving as emergency command centers, etc. Not a substitute for portable diesel generators in long-duration emergencies, but cleaner and quieter for supporting special events and ready-to-roll fast response to emergencies in the local community.

Roger - interesting post, suprising how small the bus batteries are.  The larger Tesla Model 3 battery is 72 KWH and as an owner, it does not get drained daily.  Getting all of this un-used battery capacity into the market would address many issues.  There are technical issues, but I would expect that the market and behavioral issues will be tougher.   With EV2G solutions, EV's would improve the grid, not hurt it.

Roger, the power output of Nuuve's 5MWh battery is four orders of magnitude too feeble to remediate Southern California's energy shortfall in late summer afternoons - the addition of Bluebird bus batteries, notwithstanding.

The ineptitude of the shutdown of San Onofre is only outdone by that of trying to fix CPUC's mistake by borrowing electricity from school bus batteries. Has it really come to that?
