Planning... in Brazil?

The electricity sector encompasses generation, transmission and distribution - is capital intensive and for this reason demands strategies formulated well in advance in order to be competitive.

The main source of the Brazilian power matrix is water. Therefore, storage and management of volumes in reservoirs is essential.

But Brazil decided to openly "let it go".

Our tradition of volume stored at this time of year (September) was between 50% to 70% of its nominal capacity. This can be seen from 2005 to 2009, according to data from the ONS (National System Operator).

But from 2017 to 2021 the volume stored dropped significantly, ranging between 18% and 30%. An expressive but non-casuistic fall. .Our leaders decided years ago not to do what good engineering practice teaches us: hydroelectric plants with robust reservoirs...

Instead of hydroelectric dams, we built thermal "dams". They are much more expensive, polluting and their under-dimensioning is showing the fragility of the national supply. Very bad!

Hi Rafael

Thermal Dam ? What kinds of storage are?

Would you highlight it a little bit?

I used this term to identify a thermal power plant as opposed to a hydro dam!

Hi Rafael

Thanks for the clarification

I am still learning the Brazilian Power Sector.

Old golden days, I was a fan of The Brazilian Football team. In May 1960 ( I was 11 years old then) Egypt football federation invited the 1958 World Cup winner ( Pele's team ) to play against the Egypt National team three matches in a week.  Believe it or not, the three matches scores were: 5-0, 3-1, and 3-0.

Hi Amal, those days were really great when it comes to soccer games. Every Brazilian was a soccer fan. There was a song in 1970 (Mexico coup) that included 90 Million Brazilians in action......  I remember that we used to gather at a fried and watch the coup games in 1970 when, for the first time, we had in Brazil color TV. So much fun in such a simple way!  Thanks for bringing this!
