SMRs have been talked about a lot, and I think it's one of the technologies that will live up to the hype. That said, what are the current pain points? What are the risks between now and scheduled deployment?

SMRs lose the economic advantage of scale, + their electricity will end of costing twice that of conventional reactors. The uranium enrichment required is also higher than for current reactors, enhancing the proliferation + diversion risks. The heat exchangers in SMRs are in such close proximity to the reactor section that maintenance + replacement will be substantially more difficult. The pace of reactor development is so tortuous — yes, even with modular design + off-site construction — that SMRs will not solve our immediate climate deterioration. And adding nuclear capacity at this point crowds out the space which can be filled faster, easier + cheaper with energy efficiency always first, then wind, solar, + storage, not to mention geothermal, wave + tidal power.  The first installation of SMRs in Idaho would be providing power for a small state with no realistic need for new capacity. Finally, the commercial nuclear industry has been around for some 65 yrs + is still the recipient of more subsidies than any other power sector. Note the Inflation Reduction Act + its financial support of existing reactors that are uneconomic + failing to compete in the marketplace.
                              And be careful, or I'll tell you what I really think.

Paul, I would be very careful with SMRs. They seem to have the same fatal issues that large Nuclear Power plants have. Huge water use, refueling dangers and waste that will never go away. The world will be watching so be careful.

Let me give you one pain point - water. Do (these) SMRs need the same cool water, adjusted for scale, as the large water-cooled reactors?
