Impact of Electric Vehicles on Renewable Energy Industry

The total quantity of registered cars in Turkiye are around 13 million according to TUIK (Turkiye Statistical Institute) at the end of 2020. According to various statistics from electric car users, an electric car consumes around 250WH per KM depending on weather conditions and average car speed. (When you drive faster, car consumes more power similar to internal combustion engine cars.) The average yearly range of a car is around 15.000KM in Turkiye as calculated by TUİK. If we want to find the total capacity of renewable energy to replace all internal combustion engine cars with electric cars, we can calculate as written below:
13.000.00 Cars x 15.000 KM x 250 WH = 48.750 GWH (Total Energy Required For Entire Year)
48.750 GWH / 365 Days = 133.5 GWH (Avera Total Energy Required For One Day)
An average wind turbine (depending on location and turbine model) produces 7,5 hours full energy in a day. An average solar power plant (tracking system) produces 6 hours full energy in a day (depending on location).
If we use only wind power to replace all cars, we will need:
133.5 / 7,5 = 18 GW Wind Power
If we use only solar power to replace all cars, we will need:
133.5 / 6,0 = 22 GW Solar Power
In 2021, manufacturers produce onshore turbines of 5MW such as GE Cypress platform. If Turkiye will use only onshore wind energy to replace all cars with electric cars, total 3.600 wind turbines will be required.
As of 2021, the most common PV module power is 400W (DC). To install 22 GW Solar power plant, total 66 million PV modules will be required (1.20 factor is used as AC/DC). In addition, 440 KM2 area is necessary to install 22GW which is bigger than Çankaya district of Ankara.
A very simple and rough formula can be revealed by using all these information and assumptions (similar car and KM statistics) to calculate total required renewable energy to replace all cars to electric cars in a country:
Population (in millions) x 0,25 = Required power in GW
Turkiye population : 83 million. 83 x 0,25 = 20,75 GW
