The diesel price official "maneuver"
Populism is intimately embedded in the Brazilian national life. The proximity of the elections automatically leads the threes powers to short-term solutions.
There would be nothing wrong, in principle, if the tax reduction under discussion were the counterpart of a cut in the same size of the country's budget expenditure.
Of course this doesn't happen.... as usual! And so what?
The budget becomes even more unbalanced, putting pressure on inflation and lowering investor expectations. The consequence is well known.
The situation of the majority worsens, unemployment remains high, prices maintain their upward trajectory and confidence in the country collapses.
But who cares?
Brazil is going downhill. There are no powerful manifestations in the sense of questioning the absurdities that are blatantly repeated. For the poor majority is unaware of the situation and the privileged minority undoubtedly prefers the status quo.
