In one of my previous posts, I discussed the shift from ruggedized laptops to ruggedized tablets for utilities. This article does a good job of summarizing the considerations involved in selection of a ruggedized tablet. Perhaps the biggest stumbling block is price. While they enable mobility and have a smaller form factor, ruggedized laptops can be an expensive deal. Panasonic, which has the highest market share among vendors in the market for ruggedized laptops, has products that retail for less than $1,000. In contrast, rugged tablets routinely cost above $1,000.
