Coupled with the Internet of Thing (IoT), the next phase in Wireless Wide Area Networks (WAN). 5G services, has the potential to dramatically change areas, like field service and predictive maintenance. But utilities will only realize the benefits if all of the pieces work together. Half a dozen carriers teamed up to address interoperability issues, but more work is needed. Utilities have to be sure that their IoT devices run on their private or public 5G services. As a result, ad hoc arrangement between device suppliers and service providers will become common.
