U.S. Electric Grid Security: Distribution Systems Need Attention, Report Says - MSSP Alert
U.S. electric grid’s distribution systems are vulnerable to cyberattacks that could trigger extensive power outages, report says.
Much of the effort to secure the nation's power grid from cyber attacks is focused on the so-called bulk power system, i.e., the generation resources and transmission infrastructure that comprise North America's four interconnections.
A report released by the Government Accountability Office on March 18 says it will be important for the Department of Energy to more fully address risks to distribution systems from cyber attacks in its plans to implement the national cybersecurity strategy for the grid.
If it doesn't, the report says, "federal support intended to help states and industry improve distribution systems’ cybersecurity will likely not be effectively prioritized."
