A couple of days ago, a partner of Energy Central and I were talking about if IoT was a tired topic in the industry.  Then today, I saw a post by one of our members Alan King on "What is next generation field service management software?" In the post, he mentions  IoT technologies and the forecasted growth projected in the coming years between 2021 and 2026.  

I am wondering if IoT is still something utilities are highly focused on, should they be focusing on IoT technologies, and if so, where is that focus mostly happening? 

Chime in below - I would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks @Audra for the post. Utilities in Australia are focused on several areas with IoT. Metering with electrical utilities has been around for well over a decade now, with different penetration rates between each State. We've seen different degrees of success using sensors on infrastructure.

Water has also seen the move commence to digital metering a few years back, along with sensors for vibrations and leak detection, remote monitoring etc too. We've also been involved with IoT in remote water sample reading, followed by a view to eventually move to remote dosing.

Gas was the final frontier and that is now underway using sensors on meters for remote reading, which is a very exciting project to be part of.  

Spending time in the UK and Europe of late and talking with utilities, it's been interesting to hear of similarities but also key differences around data processing, especially in relation to GDPR.

About 6-8 years ago IOT was a buzz word but today it is a "must" for many innovative, and real problem solving applications delivering what we call "outcomes" or the automation. IOT generates values data which can be used to provide insight into what and why for many services. IOT has gain more adaption in recent years as we all know. Use case based IOT integrations can deliver ROI for utilities with much needed customer satisfaction at the same time.

Use case based IOT integrations can deliver ROI for utilities with much needed customer satisfaction at the same time but more needs to be done. This would open up more discussion even at the investors’ level.

I spend a lot of my time working on cybersecurity issues and the entire conversation around IoT gives me reason to be concerned. If indeed the "T" in "IoT" are really connected to the Internet ("I" in IoT) then be prepared for an onslaught of cyber attacks on these Internet connected "Things". Personally I would like to see the "IoT" moniker replaced by "Secure Digitalization".

I agree that security is integral part of IOT solutions. We are on daily basis exposed to some vulnerability because connected technology now way of life and it can not be denied. I am oping agreement:-)

Cities for example were not open to making themselves "smart" 10 years ago but now we see more automated parking as a minimum in most cities with connected edge device and payment systems. In my experience I have not seen any one calling at the parking spot in past few years. Every one starts punching and inserting credit cards. I think we are getting better at security but also agree that it will never be zero security breach so pick our pill. Thake blue pill and you never have to use the IOT. take red pill and the experience would be amazing:-)
