DSM programs will become smarter before they become widely used, and first modernizing existing Demand Response programs. 

DSM Projects Residential additions will exceed those of Larger Commercial and Industrial Customers despite having only a 1/3 share of the current DSM market. This is due to obvious economic issues.

New regulatory incentives will be the main driver of growth for DSM Projects, due to renewed industry-wide interest in regulatory models that encourage Utilities to pursue demand-side initiatives rather than capital investment in infrastructure.

DSM and real-time control of electricity usage to provide a variety of grid services 24 hours a day, and can play a key role in meeting these new challenges.

The potential that DSM Projects has to facilitate the transition to a decarbonized energy system is remarkable and currently underexplored.

The importance of DSM Project increases as the grid faces problems balancing supply and demand with the use of more Wind and Solar, generators that can turn on and off with the weather. DSM can help by quickly reducing the demand to balance the network.

One of the first ways to harness the power of DSM is to expand Demand Response value streams using, for example, Direct Load Control for Transmission and Distribution capacity deferral and demand bidding for load shifting.

Achieving significant load reductions will require DSM programs to be implemented more frequently and over a longer period of time during the day. This will require new customer engagement measures and advanced strategies for Dispatching Load flexibility programs.

From a regulatory perspective, dynamic retail tariffs and more participation incentives will be needed.

Improved assessment of Project DSM opportunities can reduce system costs, facilitate grid modernization, and provide environmental benefits.

In a project already implemented and tested by me, I transformed the wires that distribute energy into ducts.

Through a "Firmware Tap", placed inside "Special Smart Meter", and then I can control the power flow to each consumer.

At different levels of each consumer, I can program the "Firmware Tap" in different setup.

So I can give specific characteristics to each consumer or each consumer class.

The focus of this architecture should be on Demand in KW, not on Consumption in KWh. Here it is worth a little explanation of what is Demand in KW.

Simplifying the concept, take the case of “Passenger Bus”, where the number of seats available, would be the Demand, that is, the transporting capacity available on each trip, and “Consumption in KWh”, would be the sum of passengers carried on each trip, in a given period of time.

So the Demand for Electric Energy embodied in the relationship between “Energy and Time”, taking into consideration, however, the measure of the flow of energy that installation requires for its proper functioning at any given time.

All modifications to Gateways and Meters can be done remotely.

In a way the Utilities have always done this using the load carrying capacity of Circuit Breakers installed in the consumer units, but never had the ability to increase or decrease the flow of energy. Now with the "Firmware Tap" this is already possible.

We need stories for different market segments, the DSM Projects has as one of its main features the flexibility to meet the energy needs for all segments of the market and should always have something for everyone.

The benefits of DSM Projects are difficult to quantify, because the answer depends on how is the activation functions of the technologies involved.

Without a careful program, and also without elaborate tools for measuring success or failure, we risk leaving many benefit overlooked on the table.

With the integration of Distributed Generation and Renewable Energy to the Grid, brings along also “Complexities and Several Variables”.

Any imbalance between Supply and Demand, this Approach/Topology can be very useful. And it can also be used in cases of natural disasters, or corrective maintenance in Substations and Feeders.

Today Industry, Society and Government are on the same line for advances in Energy Efficiency. When this happens, the implementation of these new architectures and approaches tend to move faster.

The Electric Industry will certainly follow the path already followed by the Telecom and Information Technology sectors. That is, with offers of differentiated plans for each segment of consumers.

The management of loads is done best by the user and being aware of the energy used. If they are aware and don't run 3 large appliances like dryer, electric store at the same time the demand stays low and costs are low. Charging the car at night Off Peak is a simple easy wat to control the demand.

DSM Projects will have to adopt smarter, as well as flexible, Architectures/Platforms before they become widely used.

These Platforms will have to be quickly reconfigured to adapt to the needs of the distribution network and consumers. This will allow Utilities to provide "Rate Plans" that best suit their customers.

With this flexibility will also come cheaper rates!
