February 11th marked National Inventors‘Day a day of recognition that started in 1983 and coincides with the birthday of one of the world’s most prolific inventors, Thomas Edison. Edison, of course, is considered by many to be a father of electricity and the eventual utility industry that keeps us all so busy today!
As a way of recognizing National Inventors’ Day and the contributions of Edison and all the subsequent creators and innovators in the energy sector, Energy Central is asking thought leaders in the industry to chime in with stories about the inventions, inventors, and modern advances that are influencing your role today.
If we can reflect back 25 years ago from a candidate perspective and how a resume was created from a hand written 8.5" x 11" legal sheet of paper or a primitive word processer type writer, or on an early word doc and the effort that went into either faxing or mailing the resume to the specific job opening was cumbersome to say the least.
Now from an HR/Recruiting perspective receiving mailed resumes, fax of resumes, (Hoping the Fax ink would not fade) and the occasional nonscheduled appointment resume drop off and the stack of inboxes that crowed the desk or the wall of filing cabinets of job postings and resumes associated by color indexing folders that all had meaning.
As I stopped and pondered on what modern advances have influenced and or is influencing my role in HR/Recruiting I would have to say is my ATS System, I am not excluding the Computer, Internet, Websites, Email address etc. All of these have paved the path for us to recruit/onboard/hire/store data at a remarkable rate of speed and efficiency.
I am grateful that from the job posting to resume gathering and verification of new hire documentation, let’s not forget the other add on features of E-Verify to background checks to drug screen results all at my fingertips. The ATS System has been a game changer for the candidate and the company and has made a significant impact to my role.
What about for you? What modern advances have impacted you or are impacting your role today in HR/Benefits/Training/Recruiting/Etc.?
