These seem to be the latest hyped technologies, so I'm curious to see the trajectory their roll out is going to take. What will down the line be the practical application? Will it ever be an affordable or reasonable option for the common person?

Who knows? Common people do not fly helicopters to work - at least not yet. The electric vs. fuel propulsion is fascinating.  The whole idea of electric helicopters is kind of surreal -- like a science fiction movie. It will be interesting to see if the cost is manageable and competitive with other forms of transportation.  We'll see soon enough.
