Did you know that roughly 80% of all SF6 (sulfur hexafluoride) gas produced worldwide is used by the electric power industry and that the largest source of SF6 emissions comes from using it as an electrical insulator in high-voltage equipment? These are the facts Gene Wolf contemplated in this illuminating T&D World article . . . link
Hitachi Energy is one of the leading companies addressing the SF6 problem. Last year, European transmission system operator TenneT placed an order with Hitachi Energy for three bays of the company's SF6-free EconiQ 420 kV gas-insulated switchgear - the world’s first SF₆-free 420 kV technology. The project is expected to be completed in 2026. In this article, Gene notes that authorities say it is equally important to develop the technology to stop leaks and prevent emissions of SF6 from existing equipment. “It’s going to be challenging, but it’s manageable. That’s what makes following technological trends so fascinating!” I totally agree!
