I have just written an article that compares the cost of two smart grid rollout scenarios. When rolling out smart devices over a densely populated area of 1 million residential locations, the sub-optimal smart grid configuration can cost several million dollars (or 67% more in this case) more than a near-optimal rollout, which can be avoided by using rigorous network design algorithms.

Have you seen real-world examples that have realized this immense disparity in costs based on deployment methods-- I'd love to see the actual Goofus vs. Gallant of those roll outs in practice.

I saw a very similar case in which a specific PLC unit had to be located throughout an entire area of 6 million households, in both rural and densely populated areas. The DSO had foreseen a little over 3 million devices in their feasibility studies. Without any hesitation, I thought it could be improved, which led me do this very research. I created a mathematical model to find the optimum number & location of network units, which yielded near-optimal solutions. My tests showed only half of what was planned could cover the entire area, potentially saving over 150 million dollars in 15-20 years. The DSO suspended their plan.
