CAISO recommends 31 transmission projects costing $4.8 billion!

Yesterday, the California Independent System Operator (ISO) released its draft 2024-2025 Transmission Plan. Thirty-one transmission upgrades are on the agenda including, the implementation of grid-enhancing technologies like advanced conductors. Most of the projects are needed to strengthen reliability, meet load growth and adapt to changing grid conditions. The plan would accommodate the state’s forecasted load growth and critical resource development plan which includes the buildout of more than 30 gigawatts (GW) of solar generation, 7 GW of in-state wind power, 2 GW of geothermal development, 9 GW of out-of-state wind generation, and 4.5 GW of offshore wind. The ISO anticipates several natural gas power plant retirements including 5.4 GW by 2034, and 12.3 GW by 2039. A public stakeholder conference call on the draft plan is scheduled for April 15, with comments due back to the ISO by April 29, 2025. The plan is scheduled to be on the agenda at the ISO’s Board of Governors’ May meeting.
