Portuguese grid operator Electricidade da Madeira (EEM) is turning to ABB for microgrid technology that will enable it to tap into local wind and solar energy resources on the Portuguese Atlantic island of Porto Santo.
A modular ABB Ability Power Store microgrid and Microgrid Plus automation system is to be installed on the island, enabling EEM to raise the island-wide mix of renewable energy from 15-30 percent, according to a news release.
ABB's Microgrid Plus will address fluctuations in frequency and voltage associated with intermittent wind and solar electricity production to ensure stable, reliable distribution and optimize the amount of emissions-free renewable energy used on the island.
Porto Santo's population swells to some four times that of its 5,500 permanent residents during the summer. Over the long term, EEM aims to accommodate that by making use of local wind and solar energy resources to meet all the island's electricity needs year-round, according to the news release.
