SSE and EET Hydrogen Announce 40MW Green Hydrogen Project in Ellesmere Port

The facility, named Gowy Green Hydrogen after the nearby River Gowy, is set to be located at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex.

The proposed 40MWe facility will supply hydrogen to local industries, helping them reduce their carbon dioxide emissions and support job creation in the region.

The UK aims to achieve 10GW of low carbon hydrogen capacity by 2030, with green hydrogen playing a key role in this effort.

Feasibility studies have been completed, and the partners are currently working on design and site investigations, with a planning application expected in 2025 to move forward with the final investment decision (FID).

In addition to this project, EET Hydrogen is also advancing on their 350MW HPP1 and 1GW HPP2 blue hydrogen projects. CEO Joe Seifert expressed the company's delight in partnering with SSE and highlighted collaborations with potential customers such as Tata Chemicals and ESB Carrington.

The hydrogen produced by the plant will be delivered to industrial offtakers in the region. Despite facing setbacks with the cancellation of two planned green hydrogen projects earlier in the year, SSE remains dedicated to green hydrogen initiatives. They scrapped projects at Scotland’s Gordonbush wind farm and the exploration of large-scale green hydrogen production using Dogger Bank B wind power were discontinued due to funding issues

Construction of Gowy Green Hydrogen is expected to begin by 2028.

Feasibility studies are complete and design and site investigations are in progress. A planning application is anticipated in 2025, with a final investment decision to follow.
