Energy: differential of leaders
Companies and institutions that present the best metrics in contracting energy ($/MWh) and its use (MWh/activity) have one characteristic in common: the way they discover alternatives and, in the sequence, how they make them viable.
A very interesting example I experienced has to do with a high voltage connection for a packaging industry in the interior of the State of São Paulo (Brazil).
The CEO was very clear. He liked my suggestion of deploying a 10 MVA substation at 138 kV to connect the unit to a nearby 138 kV line from the local utility.
There would be two significant benefits: cost reduction (tariffs) and improvement in supply quality (avoiding around 50 hours of unplanned outages per year that occurred in the 13 kV supply.)
And then a challenge posed by the CEO arose: "present an outsourced solution in which the investor, operator and maintainer of the package assumes the risks in exchange for a long-term contract backed by the savings realized". A "BOT" (build, operate and transfer) arrangement.
And so it was done! And in a record time of 6 months the project was inaugurated. 90% of the savings remained with the outsourced company for 7 years. After this period, the project would be transferred to the client.
This project changed the paradigms in Brazil. I presented it at Power Gen in Dallas, Texas (USA).
