Utilities are trying to move from fossil fuel to renewable energy, but the path has been strewn with obstacles. Coal plant operators have been trying to smooth out the process by adding natural gas generation to their facilities, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). This option enables them to squeeze more life out of their facilities but can be expensive and time consuming.
