To support its push to renewable energy, Pacific Gas and Electric Company started nine new battery energy storage projects, totaling approximately 1,600 megawatts (MW) of energy. The initiatives are expected to come online in 2024 and more than double the utility’s renewable energy storage to 3,330 MW. California needs the new energy sources because Southern California natural gas plants and PG&E’s Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP) are scheduled to be retired.
