Today, lithium-ion battery technology is supreme in the storage world. But many are doing research into finding cheaper and easier-to-use materials than lithium, cobalt, nickel and rare earths to produce zero-emissions electricity. Oxygen-ion is a potential rival at the utility backup level, and in time may even be used in smaller form factors like electric vehicles.
