Solar Energy to Power Water Desalination Plants

Saudi Arabia’s newly announced commitment to introducing solar-powered desalination plants marks a significant step in advancing the technology. In October 2012, Abdul Rahman Al-Ibrahim, governor of the country’s Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), announced plans to establish three new solar-powered desalination plants in Haqel, Dhuba and Farasan. SWCC is the biggest producer of desalinated water worldwide. In the half century since President John F. Kennedy spoke of how it would be a great service to humanity if fresh water can be economically produced from salt water, the need for innovation to satisfy humanity’s demand for clean water has become ever more urgent. While technological advances continue to improve the efficiency of desalination methods, it is vital that the sources of power used by desalination plants also continue to evolve.

Suntech Solar Energy Woes Continues

The woes at former solar superstar Suntech keeps on coming, with the company’s release of its latest earnings report which shows that its woes are likely to continue until its increasingly inevitable takeover by the state. That takeover, if and when it comes, is likely to be as filled with fireworks as Suntech’s actual decline, with all signs indicating that founder Shi Zhengrong won’t easily yield control of his company to the government-backed funding sources. Suntech’s latest results indicate the company’s deteriorating situation will continue into next year, making a government takeover likely as it struggles to repay its big debt.

JinkoSolar Gets a $1 Billion Pledge from the Chinese Government

JinkoSolar Holding Co. climbed to a six-month high after it won as much as $1 billion in financing from China Development Bank Corp. The agreement is part of the Chinese government’s effort to provide support for selected manufacturers as it picks the companies most likely to survive the current slump. JinkoSolar is the eighth-largest panel maker by volume according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance. The funds will go to JinkoSolar’s Swiss subsidiary over a five-year period and is planned to be used to develop and build solar farms in Germany, Italy and Spain.

Evergreen Valley College Dedicates 1.5 MW Solar Electric System

Evergreen Valley College, Gilbane Building Company and SunPower Corp., dedicates a 1.5-megawatt tracking solar power project at the Evergreen Valley College campus in San Jose, Calif.The ground-mounted solar array is owned by the San Jose/Evergreen Community College District and was financed through local, voter-approved Measure G-2010 bond funds. Gilbane Building Company acted as the construction manager for the district, while SunPower designed and constructed the system. SunPower will continue to provide operations and maintenance over the next 15 years. Evergreen Valley College’s solar power system features the SunPower® T0 Tracker, which rotates high efficiency SunPower solar panels to follow the sun during the day, thus increasing energy capture by up to 25 percent compared to conventional fixed-tilt systems.
