Pressure grows for energy trade agreement reform

Reform negotiations are underway for the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), a post-Cold War international trade agreement under fire from environmental NGOs and members of the European Parliament, amongst others. Is the ECT “the biggest climate action killer nobody has ever heard of,” according to Friends of the Earth Europe, or, as stated by ECT secretary-general Urban Rusanák, a potential “complement to the Paris Agreement,”? One thing is certain: meaningful reform is unlikely without Europe’s top policymakers getting into the game – and fast.
