LPO is excited to introduce the fifth installment of our "Next Generation of LPO Financing" illustrated poster series, which highlights the LPO technology sectors used in our application activity reporting every month (see: Energy.gov/LPO/MAAR). The three tech sectors featured in this poster release—EV Charging, Renewable Energy, and Transmission—are essential to the broader clean energy transition, where deployment of established emissions-reduction technologies is a crucial part of the nation's path forward.
The development of a robust electric vehicles (EV) charging sector in the U.S. is a key component of decarbonizing the nation's transportation sector. LPO financing programs can assist in the manufacture and deployment of EV charging infrastructure to help address “range anxiety"—a signifiant barrier to EV adoption—making zero-emissions vehicles a more attractive option for drivers and fleets of all sizes. "Renewable energy" as a tech sector describes a broad category of primarily mature emissions-reduction technologies such as geothermal, hydrokinetics, hydropower, onshore wind, and photovoltaic solar that are proven methods for clean energy generation when deployed at scale. As of November 2023, LPO has split this reporting category into two—Clean Energy Supply Chain & Renewables Deployment—to better reflect market realities and increased applicant interest in the Energy Infrastructure Reinvestment (EIR) program (see: https://lnkd.in/g7MMhauW) which has significantly increased LPO's authority to help utilize existing energy infrastructure for the deployment of proven, emissions-reduction technologies at scale. A modernized transmission system provides the crucial link between a rapidly changing power generation sector and increasing demand from end-users. It enables more efficient distribution of renewable energy and enhanced grid reliability, powering the transition to sustainable energy.
