This announcement from Microsoft is the best signal yet that SBOM has reached an inflection point and is now considered a mature technology, ready for main stream applications. SBOM provides the "ingredients list" of what's in software to help customers prevent the installation of harmful software, i.e. ransomware, by using a proactive, risk assessment based on the ingredients listed in an SBOM. It's very easy to get started, all you have to do is ask your software vendors to provide an SBOM "ingredients list" with each software release. Tools, both open source and commercial, are available to process the SBOM and make you aware of any risks that may be present - before you install or execute software.
