The long anticipated Executive Order on Cybersecurity was published today, see link below.

providing a purchaser a Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) for each product directly or by publishing it on a public website;

This one item alone will enable significant improvements in software supply chain risk assessments.

No doubt many will connect this order to the cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline, but we know that this has been pushed by and worked on by cyber experts (including many of our resident gurus in Energy Central) for quite some time and this is no overnight reaction. Glad to see the next steps being taken, and hopefully the tiny silver lining of the recent cyber events is that the mainstream focus remains on how important these types of actions are and how devastating and widespread the impacts of not doing so really can be.

Very true, Matt. Several people in the Energy Central community, most notable Tom Alrich, are contributing to the success of SBOM and working together to help the Energy industry protect itself from the bad guys. We have a long way to go. REA will continue to improve the SAG-PM (TM) software with best practices in each of the 7-step risk assessment process. NTIA supported SBOM's are already included in the SAG-PM(TM) software.
