The energy storage market in the U.S. is expected to grow to $2.5 billion with an annual installation size of 40 gigawatts by 2022.  In terms of megawatt-hours, the U.S. energy storage market grew 284 percent in 2016 and this number will continue to increase exponentially throughout 2017.

The Energy Storage Association predicts that “a highly networked ecosystem of two-way power flows and digitally enabled intelligent grid architecture will replace the current one-way power system” and that energy storage will play a main roll in this process by 2025.

According to Alex Eller of Navigant Research, “We’re only seeing the very beginnings of what the energy storage market is going to look like. In 2017, we expect the global market to grow 47 percent from the already record breaking year in 2016 in terms of new storage capacity deployed.”

Much of the continued growth is due to falling prices of energy storage system components such as batteries. For example, Bloomberg New Energy Finance predicts that battery technology will drop to $120 per kWh by 2030. In addition, large and independent power producers have seen energy storage costs drop by up to 70 percent in the past few years according to the Energy Storage Association.

Utilities are a major driver of the energy storage market

Utilities are quickly realizing the benefits of energy storage in terms of enhanced business and process efficiencies. These allow them to augment services to customers while benefiting their bottom line regarding operations costs. In fact, nearly 77 percent of utility executives are investing or planning to invest in energy storage solutions in the next 10 years.

Eiler says Navigant Research expects that most new global energy storage is going to be driven by utilities which will account for 76 percent of the energy storage market this year. In addition, Navigant expects that 9,000 megawatts of new energy storage capacity will be deployed for utilities by 2020.

Investments and opportunities in energy storage

The energy storage industry has begun to catch the attention of finance firms as a new area of investment, especially as it relates to sustainable and renewable energy. For instance, the International Finance Corporation now has interests in companies such as Microvast, a China-based manufacturer of fast-charging lithium-ion batteries; Fluidic Energy, a manufacturer of zinc-air batteries used to power telecom towers; and AST, from India, which deploys photovoltaic (PV) solar plus batteries to power telecom towers.

Rob Day, a partner at Black Coral Capital, sustainable energy is one of “the world’s biggest market disruption opportunities right now, and for decades to come.”

There are also opportunities for entrepreneurs in the growing energy storage market. For example, customer acquisition for residential energy storage companies and financing for small solar companies are two niches that present openings for entrepreneurs to capitalize upon, according to Nicole Litvak, a solar analyst at Greentech Media.

Integrating energy storage and renewables

Intelligent energy storage integrates Internet of Things (IoT) technology with energy storage technology to increase its effectiveness and efficiency. One of the benefits it offers is increasing the feasibility and utility of integrating renewable energy with energy storage. This leads to numerous energy saving benefits that can be especially attractive to businesses as they pursue renewable energy goals.

For example, Google parent Alphabet plans to reach its goal of using 100 percent renewable energy by the end of 2017; Apple says that 96 percent of the electricity it uses already comes from renewable energy; and Facebook is positioning itself to hit the 50 percent mark by 2018.

In addition, the prices of renewables such as solar and wind have fallen about 80 percent in the last 10 years according to David Hochschild of the California Energy Commission. Hochschild also anticipates that California is on an inevitable path to eventually be 100 percent dependent on renewable energy sources. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Sustainable and Holistic Integration of Energy Storage and Solar Photovoltaics (SHINES) program also aims to reduce the cost of electricity from combines solar and storage projects to below $0.14 per kWh.

Energy storage is becoming a major player in the global energy market and will continue to grow for the foreseeable future. As component prices decline, the benefits of energy storage will become both more attainable and attractive. Integration with the IoT will create additional advantages through intelligent energy storage to facilitate integration of energy storage and renewables as well.

This is a very sloppy article.  It doesn’t even get the dates from the EIA correct; the 40 GW number is for 2022.

The talk about “GW of capacity” is meaningless without also listing GWh (how many hours that those GW can be supplied… or maybe just minutes), and GWh is mentioned nowhere in this article or either of the cites.

If the push for “renewables” has left the grid unreliable and power interruptions are frequent, having local storage which can kick in in a fraction of a cycle to keep essential systems running will be a huge money-saver.  Even if they can only run for 5 minutes, that’s enough time to start an emergency generator.  But all of this is wasted expense that should have been used to keep the grid in the shape it was 30 years ago, instead of virtue-signalling about being “green”.

Firstly, I don’t understand how/why the author quantifies energy storage in Gigawatts. You mean gigawatt-hours?

Secondly, “For example, Bloomberg New Energy Finance predicts that battery technology will drop to $120 per kWh by 2030. “. Yet Musk’s Tesla and the media are hyping the $500/kWh cost for South Australia.

Thirdly, How many cycles is a battery good for? A few hundred? Even 500 cycles for $500/kWh capacity would add $1.00 per kWh to the cost of electricity.

The capacity of a battery system should read, for example: 100 MW/129 MWh

One without the other is nonsense.

Most people who write for magazines do not know it is nonsense.

As far as cycles, Battke (2013) has 5,000-15,000 for Lithium-Ion, V-Redox 10,000-15,000. So on that front, $500/kWh Li-Ion would add in the range of $0.033-$0.10/kWh. Don’t know to what extent they have pushed cycle life, if at all.
