Critical Infrastructure Interdependencies are Driving Government Motivation on Baseline Cybersecurity Standards
The circular inter-dependencies between critical infrastructure operations are on full display in this graphic. Electric Generation, especially in New England, depends on the availability of Natural Gas. Many Natural Gas compressors and other command and control operations depend on electricity. A failure in either can cause a failure across other critical infrastructure operations. The same is true for communication and all of the critical infrastructure dependencies. The Federal Government acknowledged the risks present when segments of this critical infrastructure fail to implement minimum baseline cybersecurity protections - it puts everyone at risk! The July 28 Cybersecurity Memorandum has tasked NIST with providing a set of minimum cybersecurity goals for critical infrastructure, in September 2021.
Critical Infrastructure Interdependencies are Driving Government Motivation on Baseline Cybersecurity Standards
If either Electricity or Communications critical infrastructure operations become compromised the entire set of critical infrastructure operations are at risk.
