Coal-Fired Power in 2021: A Recovery or a Reckoning?

Source: www.powermag.com

The winding-down of the coal power and mining sectors was never going to be pretty. In 2021, it could get ugly.

You know, now that I think about it it's been pretty telling that we haven't heard anything on the campaign trail this cycle about coal. It was a huge applause line for Trump in 2016 (and an attack line for Clinton), but it seems both sides are resigned to its fate-- it's just now about the speed of that fate and how to deal with the fall out in those communities.

Matt, this is a great point. It was a rallying cry for Trump in 2016 and was a central talking point for Romney in 2012. The decommissioning of coal plants has remained steady, even under the Trump administration, as states and utilities move toward renewables. This year we've seen coal dip below renewables and reach new lows in energy production. It will be interesting to see where coal is next year, and whether this year was an aberration, a new floor for coal, or the start of a dramatic drop in its position in energy portfolios.
