It has seemed a long process from completion of the construction of the first unit in 2018 to the start of operations sometime later this year. However, if the four units come on line over the next few years as planned it will represent a massive and rapid shift in the generation mix, supplying 25% of demand. The units are based on the APR-1400 design already in use as Shin Kori unit 3 in South Korea. However, the Barakah design has larger pumps, heat exchangers and pipes to increase the water flow rate of the cooling systems to deal with higher seawater temperatures in the Gulf.
