Ten Countries Drive Energy Storage System Market

A new report from Navigant Research provides forecasts for utility-scale energy storage systems (ESSs) deployed globally in terms of power capacity (MW), energy capacity (MWh), and revenue generated from the development of new projects in 26 countries wor

The few are driving the many, according to Navigant Research, in 2019. The market research company found that 10 countries will account for 1,242.1 MW of new Energy Storage System capacity, and the other close to 200 countries will install the remaining  20% of new systems.  The Big 10  include the US, France, Germany, the UK, Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea, and Brazil. Are you surprised that so few countries drive so much of the purchases? Is there any country that you expected to be on the list? Any one that you did not expect?

I think if you told me the stat without telling me which 10, I'd come close to predicting these. Some of the largest economies missing, like Russia or Canada, have sufficient hydro capacity that can be used as storage. I am surprised the degree to which to purchases are concentrated on these 10, though.

It does come to economics. Only about 20 of the world's approximately 200 countries generate $1 trillion dollars. The others would not seem to have the money needed to invest in the new technology.

That's a fair point, Paul, and I guess it goes to show that we're still in the early stage of energy storage. As the costs continue to plummet then reach of the technology will likely spread to further economies

I'm glad there is records of the power sources. If not they would never admit it.
