Just before the war in Ukraine began, I updated my winter charging pattern for my electric cars. I updated this article from January 2022 to contain the first results from the improvement I made.

How long do you think before the utilities are engaged and helping customers to figure out the optimal charging patterns based on seasonality like this? Aggregating these efforts will certainly compound the results

I think the key will be utilities helping to install PV on industrial building so that people can charge their cars whilst at work. We see some first modest initiatives in this respect over here in Europe, but it will have to happen on a large scale.

Optimal charging pattern software should be integrated into the charging station devices. Also here, the first products start coming with intelligent software, e.g. Fronius WattPilot charging stations.

Thanks for this, Thomas.  I've been assuming the "conventional wisdom/rule-of-thumb" that it was best for both grid and consumer to recharge EVs at night. This is some interesting food for thought, and as Matt says, would be good to have more data from utilities to further investigate the phenomenon.
