Anyone who pays the slightest attention to electric vehicle transition knows that - whether real or imagined – the lack of an adequate charging network is identified as a major hindrance to adoption. The Biden administration wants to do something about it. So they put our money where their mouth is and allocated $7.5 billion for the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program.
The program is intended to create a nationwide network of EV chargers with 97% uptime and contactless payment systems. In other words: make them as good as Tesla chargers.
Not long ago Vartan Badalian, director for transportation for the GreenBiz Group, tried a four-charger NEVI station in New York. In his review he noted that the station had only been operational for a month. Mentioning the “newness: might have been to soften the blow that the darn thing did not function as advertised.
According to Mr. Badalian two of the four stations had malfunctioning credit card readers. Ans one charger had a screen that was a lovely shade of black. The good news is that one of the four worked.
When he finally initiated the charging process, he was unable to do so at full power. He assumed this was because of the cold weather. He later charged up at a Tesla station without incident.
This is a sample of one and the station was only operational for a month – although I don’t consider that a valid excuse. Hopefully, as the program progresses, things will go closer to plan.
