HyDeploy has taken a further step towards injecting zero carbon hydrogen into the UK’s gas network, having been given the go-ahead
A £22.5m Ofgem Network Innovation Competition project delivered by a consortium, including partners Northern Gas Networks, Cadent, Progressive Energy Ltd, Keele University, HSE – Science Division and ITM Power, HyDeploy will blend hydrogen with natural gas in Winlaton, Gateshead.
The trial initially began in October 2019 and looked to blend hydrogen into Keele University’s private gas network, hoping to supply a blend of up to 20% hydrogen, by volume, with natural gas to 100 homes and 30 faculty buildings at the university in Staffordshire.
However, in a ten-month long pilot, due to start in August, HyDeploy will now take its efforts a step further and blend up to 20% of hydrogen for 668 homes, a school and small businesses i Winlaton.
Those customers who are part of the pilot will be able to use their gas supply and appliances just like normal, without any changes needed!
Commenting on the next steps, Tim Harwood, Head of Programme Management and H21 Project Director at Northern Gas Networks, said: “We’re delighted the HSE has given us the go-ahead for the next phase of HyDeploy at Winlaton. The project will provide more vital evidence about the possibilities of blending hydrogen into the natural gas network across the UK, as a stepping-stone to decarbonising heat with no disruption to customers’.
