Green steel?

Hydrogen produced using green power has the potential to massively decarbonize energy-intensive industries. An electrolysis plant installed as part of the H2FUTURE research project in voestalpine’s steel works in Linz.

Charley, what evidence do you have the electricity powering the Linz plant comes from renewable sources?

For Austria as a country in 2019 Hydro,wind and solar had a 72% share of electricity generation. 

Coal and oil was 5.5% , NG was 15.2% and Biofuels/Waste was 7.3%.

Note: Upper Austria where Linz is located gets 81.7% share from renewables.

Plus the trend is towards more wind and solar. The last coal plant shut down in April 2020.

Austria has shut down its last coal-fired power plant as part of a plan to end the use of fossil fuels for energy production by 2030.

The government aims to shut the gas-fired plants by the end of the decade, after which the country will generate all of its energy from renewable sources.

GE Renewable Energy wins turbine order for 157-MW wind farm in Austria

GE Renewable Energy won a contract to supply 30 wind turbines for PÜSPÖK Group's planned 157-MW project in Burgenland region in Austria.

Turbine installation is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2021, with a target full commissioning and operation date by the end of 2021. 

Wind generation takes up 13% of Austria's current power consumption and is expected to meet 26% of the national electricity supply by 2030, according to Austrian wind power association, IG Windkraft.

Finally from grid annual report

H2FUTURE is an example of a project that does just that. Funded as part of Horizon 2020, the project investigates whether it is possible for fossil fuels to be replaced by green hydrogen for the purpose of steel production and involves cooperating with a consortium of international industrial partners. This collaboration resulted in a highly flexible PEM4)electrolyser with a 6 MW capacity – and one of the largest low-pressure systems of its kind in the world – being commissioned on the voestalpine site in Linz.

The electricity required to run the electrolyser will be sourced predominantly from excess renewable power generation and therefore should also help ensure the stability of the power grid.

Austria is like many other countries in Europe - moving rapidly to a renewable dominant grid.

This a major development. Decarbonizing the steel industry will lead to great returns in climate goal benchmarks. I would love to see hydrogen applied to decarbonizing the cement industry. If we can figure out steel and cement, our future looks a bit brighter.
