Wireless telecoms operators have been pioneering, pivotal players in the development and growth of off-grid solar-plus-storage home energy systems, as well as a range of online services in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The off-grid solar partnership between Vodacom, Vodafone M-Pesa mobile mony service and ENGIE's Fenix International aims to reach 200,000 households and offer mobile money and banking services in Mozambique within three years according to a news report.
Mozambique will be the fourth Sub-Saharan nation in which Fenix has rolled out and connected solar-plus-storage home energy systems within the past year. It has already installed half a million across Benin, Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Uganda and Zambia, according to the report.
In addition to clean, secure, efficient and reliable, pioneering start-ups, such as Fenix, are providing LED lights, solar lanterns, fans, radios, mobile phone chargers, small television sets and Internet services via solar home systems across the region. Offering ways to enhance energy access for small businesses and community services is another focal point.
