Great #energystorage article, on #hydropower - with a focus on #closedloop systems. https://lnkd.in/gTpCQUw

The #FERC #expeditedlicensing process that was announced in April, 2019, is particularly relevant here.

Perhaps as the #energystoragegrandchallenge evolves we will see support for this approach to move #beyondbatteries.

Also relevant, DOE announced today a technical assistance opportunity under its #HydroWIRES initiative. See DE-FOA-0002363.

Lastly, we've got an interesting potential #pumpedhydrostorage site if anyone would like to discuss.

To my understanding, there hasn't been any vast improvement in hydro tech recently and it's not really expected to come-- so it's more a matter of whether or not the assets are deployed. Given that, why do you think there seems to be a renewed focus on pumped hydro storage today? What changed to bring it back into the focus anew?

Hi, Mtt

It is just a cut and paste reminder article.

Hydro pumping and storage is a site specific project which limits its implementation .

Matt, the renewed focus is simply a function of the increased penetration of renewables. Let's face it, the sun only shines during daylight hours and wind, while chaotic, primarily blow strongest at night. Pump storage represents one of the true grid scale storage mediums that provides many benefits, flexibility, long duration storage, inertia, primary frequency response, voltage/reactive support, etc. It is ideal when paired with significant renewable generation. One of the recent technology upgrades in pumped storage is the introduction of variable drive pumps which makes the units much more flexible to plant owners and system operators.
