Data centers are energy hogs and Amazon claims to meet more than 50 percent of its energy needs from renewable energy. Of course, Amazon's business will provide a boost to BP's renewable unit which contributes miniscule amounts to its overall bottom line. (The company doesn't break out revenue figures from its renewable energy initiatives and, instead, lumps them with figures for natural gas.) Another tech conglomerate, IBM, is putting its chips behind a carbon tax to reduce emissions from its data centers. IBM is targeting 55 percent renewable energy for its data centers by 2025 and thinks carbon tax is the way to go to achieve that goal.
