We spend a lot of time talking about global warming in the context of escalating air temperatures. But are the oceans really the key to the Earth’s well-being?

When it comes to the oceans, rising sea levels and diminishing coral reefs make the headlines. Over a year ago I highlighted one of the more alarming potential outcomes: the shutting down of AMOC – the Atlantic Meridional Overturing Circulation.

Say what?

AMOC is an ocean current that includes the Gulf Stream.  Here’s the kicker, if AMOC were to stop flowing, it may not be reversible. In other words – life as we know today would be over.

At this point, the probability of any of this happening is more speculation than science. However, it goes to the “point of no return” dilemma. We may be able to reverse the trend in air temperatures, but it we exceed a yet unknown limit, it could result in inversible harm to our oceans.

Check out today’s post for the latest on ocean temperatures.
